Green Cooking & Dining
Becoming more green in the kitchen can be an easy feat for some and a daily struggle for others. The size of the family and it’s budget is two factors that affect the outcome. We hope to provide tips that can help most families- some will find them easy and others will not. Please take what you can use in your kitchen to become more green as every step helps!
- Cleaners- toss the toxic cleaners and go natural
- Toss the disposable products- paper plates, napkins, paper towel*, plastic-ware, plastic cups
- Replace the disposable products with reusable- cloth napkins, regular plates, cups, silverware, and un-paper towels
- Toss the plastic- for the most part. Some plastic is necessary for most families for tableware or storage. But make sure it’s BPA free and safe for use with food.
- Plastic part 2- General Warning- if the plastic items have “scaring” or peeling- do not use- toss and buy more- they can “exhale” toxic chemicals into your food.
- Reduce your water use in the kitchen, most families could hand wash with less water and energy than a dishwasher. One exception? If you have the newest energy efficient dishwashers.
- Buy organic! No pesticides, chemicals and healthier
- Buy local- less travel means fresher and less emissions.
- Stop buying “small appliances” there is a convenience appliance for nearly every single purpose these days- most of which we really don’t need but they sure look neat. However they are power guzzlers, have a short shelf life and take up space in our homes. Think twice before buying them.
- Think Veggie- Vegetarians and Vegans are typically healthier, have less waste leaving the kitchen (bones and other tossed items aren’t in these kitchens) and in the case of veggies and fruit most people use nearly the entire veggie in their dish.
- Grow a garden- nothing is more rewarding than eating dinner grown in your back yard!
- Compost- Natures recycling bin- so many rewards!
- Shop in bulk- reduce trips to stores, save by buying in bulk and sometimes you can find reduced packaging (wasted resources) if you buy in bulk.
We know these are not all inclusive but these are things that we have found slowly and surely that worked for us!
* Paper towels are easily replaced for almost all jobs with “Un-Paper Towels”. These are cloth towels that are hand made to snap on the paper towel roll. You can find them commonly on www.etsy.com or in other natural parenting forums. We keep one roll on hand for grease absorbtion and other uses that cloth is not safe for.
