Green in the Nursery

When you learn you are expecting a little one you want to do everything you can to make sure that their start in life is the best. Believe it or not by making your nursery more environmentally friendly you are also making it healthier for your little one. Here is a short list of things you can do to make your nursery more green, watch for our special reports with more specifics on this topic.

  • Use Non-Toxic Products- low pvc paint, natural finishes, natural fibers
  • Go Chemical Free- choose products for your child that are safe and natural- if you can’t pronounce it or don’t know what it is with easy research it’s probably not a great ingredient for everyday use.*
  • Go Organic- Choose organic bedding, diapers, clothing and accessories- they are made from pesticide free fibers and are renewable resources
  • Pass on the “wanted” baby items that get used rarely- there is no special list for this but many parents purchase every plastic-mass produced item out there only to use it once or twice or some not at all. Try to make every purchase reasonable and worth the investment.**
  • Create a health air flow in your nursery- have your vents cleaned, new carpet, and allow for frequent ventilation.
  • Choose locally made furniture of renewable resources with no stain or safer stain.

Small moves can make a world of difference, if one thing is too expensive not fret- just do what you can. As we repeat many times every effort no matter how big or small is making our world a better place.

*There are exceptions to this rule but what we stress is reading labels, doing research and asking questions.
**As we have all seen many of the mass market baby products are being recalled more and more every year for toxic finishes, harming/killing infants, and general unsafe products. Therefore the less you buy, the better you can be. Many families are not registering or purchasing many of these items and then keeping gift cards for IF they determine after baby they do have a need for them.
