Green in the Yard
Greening up your yard is actually a very simple process. I think most people will be pleasantly surprised at just how easy it is. Below are some suggestions:
- Compost. Compost is not only easy, but a free way of getting great nutrients for your garden and shrubs. (see previous post on composting)
- Buy recycled! You can re-use any of your containers as planters (yogurt containers for instance) or check into the plethora of environmentally friendly planters now available. You can also go recycled when it comes to your yard furniture!
- Make your yard a “native” landscape. Buy and propagate native plants rather than introduced species. A great incentive to grow native plants is that they are already adapted to your specific climatic conditions resulting in requiring less fertilizer and water.
- Harvest your rainwater. Adding a rain barrel is a perfect way to capture mineral and chlorine free water for watering lawns, yards, gardens or washing your car. Not only will you decrease your water bill, but you will reduce stormwater runoff.
